Nota Baloyi Defends Pearl Thusi Amid School Fees Backlash: “Stop Relying on Celebrities

Controversial music executive Nota Baloyi has stepped into the spotlight to defend Pearl Thusi following backlash over a school fees promise that was never fulfilled. The drama began when Thusi was criticized on social media after she allegedly failed to follow through on a promise to help a mother pay her children’s outstanding school fees. The reality TV star was dragged online, with many accusing her of “selling a dream” to a desperate parent.

Amid the uproar, Nota Baloyi voiced his support for Thusi, offering a stark message to parents who expect celebrities to bail them out. In a post that stirred even more debate, Nota suggested that parents should stop relying on public figures for financial assistance and consider sending their children to no-fee schools if they can’t afford the costs. “Take your kids to a no-fee school and leave Pearl Thusi alone,” he wrote. “Stop coming to the timeline with problems you should be bringing to your family. You’re not settlers—your ancestors have been here for centuries. Why can’t your cousins help? Nobody owes you a bursary, even if they promised!

The post quickly sparked a wave of reactions, with some agreeing with Nota’s blunt approach, arguing that the pressure on celebrities to constantly “save the day” can be unrealistic and unfair. Others, however, criticized his harsh words, suggesting that he was dismissing the genuine struggles of parents facing financial hardship.

As the debate rages on, it’s clear that the issue touches on deeper societal concerns—such as the responsibility of public figures and the expectations placed on them, as well as the realities many families face when it comes to providing quality education for their children. Whether or not one agrees with Nota’s perspective, his message has certainly ignited an important conversation about community support, personal responsibility, and the role of celebrities in addressing social issues.

Known for her role as Zodwa on Gomora, Mchunu expressed surprise at her own success, saying she never imagined she could earn a living from acting. She revealed that her upbringing had been difficult, and she had children at a young age. For a time, she even locked herself indoors, ashamed of her circumstances. Her life changed the day Winnie Khumalo visited her. “We were neighbors, and she asked me what I was doing for a living,” Mchunu recalled. “I had just returned home after living elsewhere, and people had been talking about me.” She shared that she had no matric and was willing to take any job, even cleaning.
