Isibaya’s Future Hangs In The Balance

Things are seemingly shaking again, at the Mzansi Magic’s headquarters as one of the channel’s long-standing hit soapies Isibaya’s future, apparently hangs in the balance.

If the latest report is anything to go by, Isibaya might be the next show on Mzansi Magic’s chopping block. According to entertainment commentator Phil Mphela, sources informed him that if the soapie’s numbers do not improve, the channel might consider pulling the plug on it.

In a tweet Phil reported, “Word is, the Mzansi Magic show’s fate is in limbo. Sources tell me that the show is on the brink and barring any change in fortunes it will be cancelled. The show’s cancellation has been the murmur since early this year.”

Isibaya started airing in 2013 and it has become a household name in Mzansi. The show won the hearts of many with it’s intriguing witchcraft storyline, involving one of it’s most loved, but controversial characters Nkabinde played by Zakhele Msibi.

The show is centered around the Zungu and Ndlovu families who are rivalries in the notorious taxi industry. The families are forced to mend their relationship as their children Thandeka played by Nomzamo Mbatha and Sbu played by Sdumo Mtshali were in a realtionship.

The show showcased new faces in the industry including Zakhele Mabasa, Mdu Gumede, Nomzamo Mbatha who is now based in the US and Jessica Nkosi, who recently left the show after landing a role on The Queen Mzansi.

This is not the first show on the channel to be on the verge of being canceled. One of it’s popular shows Isithembiso, was recently canned due to low viewership. One of Bomb Productions executives, Angus Gibson confirmed to Isolezwe that the show was not going to be renewed for a new season.

“Yes, I can confirm that the current season will not be renewed for further seasons. Viewers can expect memorable storytelling in these remaining six months.”

Mzansi Magic and the SABC have been chopping numerous shows recently due to not attracting a lot viewers.

Last year in November, rumors gained momentum that one of the public broadcaster’s shows Uzalo was going to be cancelled, after it’s contract with the SABC ended and leaving people confused and some in a slight mode of panic.

SABC’s acting spokesperson, Vuyo Mthembu, TshisaLIVE debunked the rumors.

“The SABC can confirm that there is no truth to these rumours. Although the SABC is not at liberty to discuss its contractual obligations with third parties, the organisation can confirm that Uzalo will continue to be broadcast on SABC1,” he told the publication.
