AWARD-WINNING songstress Brenda Mtambo is taking on a new challenge.
She has just joined the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association (Capasso) as a board member.
The 41-year-old singer spoke to Daily Sun about her new venture.
“I was a candidate to be on the board, and we were nine. We had to present our manifesto and motivate for our position. I got to be elected like that,” she said. Brenda said it’s a step towards empowering creators in the industry.
“But also in my career because I’m very passionate about the music business. I love empowering women in the industry to look in the business side of music, and the opportunity to sit on the board and make the decisions that empower creators is something I don’t take lightly.
“It means so much growth in my career, it means a lot of learning, and it’s a lot of work because we become decision makers of whatever needs to be done in the industry to empower creators because that’s what Capasso does,” Brenda said.
She said she’ll help in finding ways to assist creators in Mzansi. The singer won her first South African Music Award (Sama) this year for B Contemporary Album with her album, Sane.
“It was so huge because it was obviously my first time winning a Sama. It’s the biggest award in the country, and it meant everything. I was so grateful that my work was being recognised in the way that it was, especially in that category. I’ve been wanting to win so much.
“It means South Africans are listening. I feel seen, validated, and it’s a pat on the back to say I’m doing well,” she said.
Brenda also revealed that she’s working on new music.
“A lot of music shows and a tour. I took a break this year in terms of hosting my own shows because of my mental health, which I opened up about.
“Next year, it’s new music, new everything. We’ll have a show in February, and we’ll announce everything once it’s set and ready,” the singer said.
