Mpho Popps and wife Latoya share interesting facts about their relationship

On Tuesday, Mpho Popps and his wife, Latoya Modikoane, stepped in to host The Best T in the City in place of Tbose.

Coincidentally, the day also marked their wedding anniversary. After their first-ever radio hosting stint, we sat down with the couple for a quick and lively chat.

When asked what people might be surprised to learn about them, Mpho revealed that they’re actually quite boring.

“Early in our relationship, we were the couple who loved hosting parties,” he shared. “Our previous house even had an entertainment lapa, and we were always the life of the party. Now, we’ve become more low-key. If it’s not just the two of us, it’s the three of us with our daughter. We’ve grown more boring—and more loving.”

Latoya added that Mpho is far shyer than most people realise.

“Many people think Mpho is extroverted and I’m introverted, but within our close circle, it’s the opposite. Because of his job, he has to be outgoing, but in reality, he’s more reserved. When we meet new people, I’m usually the one who sparks conversations and feels more comfortable. I enjoy being out there and meeting people, whereas he prefers to stay in the background.”

The couple also shared what they’d do if they could swap lives for a day. Mpho joked, “I feel like women enjoy a lot of privileges, and I’d take full advantage of that chivalry. My wife is an interior designer, so if I were in her body for the day, I’d channel my Top Billing presenter. I’d literally go to all her suppliers and start networking like crazy.”

Latoya, on the other hand, admires Mpho’s carefree nature. “That’s the one thing I love about you. I’d embody that energy and do all the things I’m usually too afraid to do. I’d jump on stage, for example. I think I have a good sense of humour, so I’d put it to the test.”

When asked if their relationship had a theme song, Latoya didn’t hesitate. “Differences by Genuine—that’s our song. I even included it in our wedding vows,” she said. Mpho added, “It’s funny because the very thing that has both kept us apart and brought us together is our differences. Over the years, we’ve learned that our differences are what make us unique. I love that she’s different from me.”

Reflecting on their experience standing in for Uncle T, Mpho admitted it was a big responsibility but entirely worth it. “I’ve often been a guest presenter, but what made today so special is that my wife and I created a vision board recently, and one of my goals was to do radio. I was initially nervous for Letoya because this isn’t her usual space, but it was so much fun, and time flew by.”

Latoya echoed his sentiments, saying, “At first, I was really anxious, but I grew more comfortable as we went along. It was a great experience, and it’s a memory that will stay embedded in our minds forever. I’m glad I got to do it for the first time with him.”
