Anneline Kriel, an iconic South African beauty queen, is celebrating her 69th birthday today

Anneline Kriel, an iconic South African beauty queen, is celebrating her 69th birthday today, 28 July 2024.

ANNELINE KRIEL’S DAYS ON THE CATWALK
Kriel was born in Pretoria and won Miss South Africa 1974. She was crowned Miss World in the same year. She was the second South African woman to hold the Miss World title after Penelope Coelen in 1958. Kriel dazzled the world when she won the title of Miss World.

Helen Morgan won the Miss World title in 1974, but had to relinquish her title a few days after the pageant. This was due to articles in tabloid newspaper claiming she was an unmarried mother. There were also allegations – which she denied – of an affair with a married man. As a result, Anneline Kriel received the crown as the first runner-up.

Beyond the Miss World title, the iconic South African had a successful career in acting and modelling and the media christened her ‘South Africa’s Princess Di’, according to Cape Town Today. At the time of the Miss World pageant, Anneline Kriel faced controversy due to her being from a country that was bound by apartheid and isolated by international sanctions. Countries like the US and Australia refused to welcome her as part of the customary world tour.

Commenting on her reign as Miss World in an interview with Vrye Weekblad, Kriel said that ‘it was a year full of unexpected events with many unexpected experiences that taught me to swim at the deep end and survive’. She added that she learned that life is not necessarily fair and also not to easily trust people.

THE MEN IN HER LIFE AND HER NEW HOME
Anneline Kriel now resides in Mauritius with her husband and runs a swimwear brand with her daughter.

She married Sol Kerzner, renowned hotelier and casino tycoon, in 1980. They divorced in 1985. Following her separation from Sol Kerzner and Philip Tucker, Kriel married Peter Bacon, CEO of Sun International and former protégé of Kerzner. The couple chose to make Mauritius their new home.

Kriel continues to voice her concerns on issues close to her heart, e.g. farm murders in South Africa.

“I fear for South Africa’s future. After almost 30 years of ANC government, there are still so many South Africans living in poverty and insecurity.”
Anneline Kriel

“The farm murders in South Africa bother me and keep me awake at night when I lie thinking about so many farmers on remote farms who live in fear when it gets dark and quiet in the evening.”

‘Crown Chasers’: Two contestants lose chase for Miss SA crown
wo contestants were eliminated from the Miss SA Top 13 on the latest episode of the reality series Crown Chasers, which aired on S3 on Saturday 27 July.

TWO CONTESTANTS VOTED OFF ‘CROWN CHASERS’
The Miss SA Top 13 has officially dropped to Top 11 after two contestants were eliminated on the latest episode of the reality series titled Crown Chasers. The reality series aired on S3 (formerly SABC 3) on Saturday 27 July. Nobuhle Langa and Lethaukuthula Maseko were the two contestants voted off.

Mia le Roux was the winner of the episode again, for the second week running with guest judge, media personality Andile Ncube, joining the show’s resident judges Leandie du Randt and Lerato Kganyago.

Q&A WITH NOBUHLE LANGA AND LETHAUKUTHULA MASEKO
How was your Miss South Africa journey?

Maseko: It was a challenging yet rewarding experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Langa: It is one of the highlights of my life, because it has changed my life and lives of the children that I take care of. Every day was a learning experience, where I challenged myself but also had fun. I felt so free, vulnerable and happy. For the first time I related so much to other women, and they to me because I realised when I spoke about my life and challenges, someone else felt the same. That was the beauty of it, you learn and grow together. I made lifelong friendships with the ladies I met from the Top 30.

What was the best/worst part of the journey?

M: The best part was sharing my story and intentions with the nation. As someone from an underprivileged background, I’m grateful to have inspired others in similar circumstances. The worst was being away from my family for five weeks, and dealing with the high pressure of reality TV was tough.

L: The best thing was to rediscover who I am as an individual. I feel empowered and ready to empower more people, I know my strengths and my weaknesses, I am resilient, and I can achieve anything I set my mind to. The hardest part of the journey was being in a confined space and not being able to do the things that I usually do, so as going to gym at 5am every day, sitting outside and soaking in some sun and feeling free in terms of my movements. The lack of sleep was also tough.

Would you do it again?

M: Yes, it’s always been my dream!

L: No. I lived every single day in the present moment and trusted that God guided me through every decision and intention. I lived out my purpose as a Miss South Africa 2024 Top 13 and would gladly see more girls enter to live out their purpose.

What did you learn about yourself?

M: I discovered that I need to work on my photoshoot skills! (laughs)

L: I learned that I am resilient, fun and can dance my heart out. This journey forced me to tap into who I am and not to feel ashamed about who I am. People have always made me feel unseen because I am softly spoken, but I can still be a leader with my soft voice. I don’t need to change who I am as my presence on its own commands space because of how I touched the hearts of many.

MORE ON THE SHOW
What challenges did you face in the episode you were voted out on?

M: I struggled with the mini challenge, which involved racing, as I don’t have a driver’s license yet.

L: I was not at all well when we were filming the episode, so it was difficult to for me to be at my best and give it my all.

What’s next for you?

M: Back to work and reality!

L: I will be completing my audit articles at EY and writing my final board exam to qualify as a Chartered Accountant. Using the Miss South Africa platform, I want to grow my non-profit company, Langelihle Youth Foundation and work towards partnering with Brand South Africa and the United Nations Populations Fund to showcase the work that we do to gain public attraction and more support from citizens, corporate, government and other NPCs.

MISS SA 2024
In the final episode of Crown Chasers, titled Stepping into the Sun, which will air on S3 on Saturday 3 August 3 at 20h30. The remaining 11 contestants come out of the darkness and into the light to bring all they have to make it to the Miss South Africa 2024 finale stage.

In recent years, she has frequently discussed the abuse she had as a child, which has strengthened her resolve. She has frequently spoken about the abuse she endured while living with her fifth child’s father. She is currently happily married with seven children.

In the midst of it all, she married and had five children from previous relationships. But don’t let your past dictate your future. Zodwa rose to prominence after landing a role on Muvhango as Nomarashiya.

From there, the rest was history. In recent years she has capped her illustrious career with accolades, including the precious Golden Horn Award.
