10 South African Celebrities Who Sh0ckingly Went Bankrupt

In the world of fame and fortune, many South African celebrities have faced unexpected financial turmoil. Here are ten well-known figures whose journeys took a surprising turn towards bankruptcy.

## 1. Dr. Malinga

Dr. Malinga, a celebrated South African musician and record producer, rose to fame with his hit single “Via Orlando” in 2018. After signing with Universal Music and winning a South African Music Award, his career flourished. However, by 2019, he found himself in 2 million rand of debt. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated his situation, stripping him of income from live shows. He later shared his struggles on a podcast, revealing he lost much of his property due to tax issues. Thankfully, fellow artists like Black Coffee came to his aid, helping him recover.

## 2. Zola 7

Zola 7, a multi-talented musician, actor, and TV presenter, became a household name through his impactful show on SABC1. However, financial woes soon followed, attributed to ongoing child support disputes and health issues stemming from epilepsy. In 2020, he revealed spending 4.5 million rand to produce a season of his show without reimbursement. A fundraising effort by fans ultimately provided much-needed support, allowing Zola to regain some stability.

## 3. Zahara

Zahara, a renowned singer-songwriter, once dominated the South African music scene with numerous awards to her name. Yet, poor financial choices led her to struggle to pay bills, and she faced the risk of losing her home. Videos showcasing her in distress went viral, prompting fans to rally and assist her financially. Although battling alcohol addiction played a role in her difficulties, Zahara has highlighted exploitation by industry insiders as a major factor in her financial struggles.

## 4. Massevenza

Known for his appearances in popular TV shows and commercials, Massevenza’s career took a drastic downturn after personal issues surfaced. By 2015, he was reportedly begging on the streets. Despite a brief resurgence in music, he faced hardships again, attributed to mental health challenges after an accident. His journey serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly fortunes can change.

## 5. Innocent Masuku

Innocent Masuku, famous for his role in “Uzalo,” fell into the grip of substance abuse, costing him approximately 500,000 rand. Although he has since turned his life around and achieved sobriety, he candidly shares how addiction nearly derailed his career and finances, offering hope and cautionary tales to others.

## 6. Bricks

Bricks, a celebrated kwaito artist, was once on the verge of legendary status before a conviction for a serious crime led to his downfall. His imprisonment not only cut off his music income but also resulted in his disappearance from the industry, leaving him financially destitute and unable to support his family.

## 7. Steve Chabangu

Former soccer star Steve Chabangu enjoyed a lucrative career but mismanaged his finances after retiring early. A lavish lifestyle, coupled with gambling, led to his bankruptcy. Steve’s story highlights the importance of financial literacy for athletes transitioning out of professional sports.

## 8. Katlego Mphela

Katlego Mphela, another soccer player, faced significant financial challenges after being released from his club. He candidly admitted to squandering his earnings, leading to repossession of his home and car. His experience underscores the necessity for players to plan for their future beyond their playing days.

## 9. Pitch Black Afro

Pitch Black Afro, a prominent kwaito and hip-hop artist, squandered his wealth due to substance abuse, which ultimately led to his incarceration for a tragic crime. His case illustrates how personal demons can obliterate even the most promising careers.

## 10. Vusi Kunene

Mpho Sebeng Receives Posthumous SAFTA Award

Mpho Sebeng, a talented South African actor, was posthumously honored at the 2024 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) for his outstanding role in the telenovela *The Estate*. Sebeng tragically passed away on May 5, 2024, at just 30 years old, leaving a significant impact on the South African entertainment industry.

Nearby concert tickets

The SAFTAs recognized Sebeng’s contributions to acting, awarding him the title of Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela. This recognition came as part of a competitive category, where he faced formidable contenders such as Seputla Sebogodi from *Redemption* and Thembinkosi Mthemby from *The River*. Sebeng’s portrayal of Skhumbozo garnered praise, solidifying his legacy even after his untimely death.

Prior to the SAFTAs, Sebeng had received nominations for the Annual Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards for his role in *Ingoma*, but those nominations were later rescinded. The recognition at the SAFTAs marks a significant acknowledgment of his talent during a time of deep mourning for his fans and colleagues.

The announcement of Sebeng’s SAFTA win stirred mixed reactions among South African audiences. While many celebrated the honor, others felt that the recognition came too late, as highlighted by various comments on social media. One user, @sheldon_cameron, poignantly remarked, “My brother is not here to accept this. I hope he is smiling in heaven.”

Another user, @Barffoon, compared the gesture to awards given to other late artists, suggesting it was a mere formality. Others speculated whether the award was awarded out of sympathy rather than merit. Comments varied widely, reflecting the complex feelings surrounding posthumous honors. Some argued that awards shows often fail to adequately recognize talent during an artist’s lifetime, calling into question the validity of such accolades.

### Upcoming Projects

Despite his passing, fans will have the opportunity to see Sebeng in action soon. He was set to appear in the upcoming Showmax drama series, *016FM*, which is centered around the Vaal broadcasting industry. This series features notable figures from South Africa’s media landscape, including podcast host Sol Phenduka and legendary radio personality Ba2cada. This upcoming release offers fans a chance to celebrate Sebeng’s talent and continue enjoying his performances.

### Conclusion

Mpho Sebeng’s posthumous recognition at the SAFTAs serves as both a tribute to his remarkable skills as an actor and a reminder of the fleeting nature of life. As the South African entertainment community mourns his loss, they also celebrate his legacy, which continues to resonate through his work. Sebeng’s talent will not be forgotten, and his contributions to South African television will be remembered by many for years to come.
