South Africa is mourning the loss of renowned artist and teacher Thembisile Twala, who has sadly passed away. Twala was well known for her contribution to the music industry, particularly through her collaboration with Kwaito star Zola 7.

A Rising Star in the Music Industry
Mzansi first got to know Thembisile Twala when Zola 7 featured her on his 2004 hit song Don’t Cry from his album Bhambatha. The talented singer was discovered by Zola in 2003 through his popular SABC show Zola 7, which provided a platform for many aspiring artists.

 

 

 

 

Her powerful voice and passion for choral music made her a beloved figure in the South African music scene, particularly within choral and gospel music circles.

Announcement of Her Passing
The Gauteng Choristers, a choir with which Twala had been affiliated since 2003, announced her passing on Saturday, March 1, 2025, through their official Facebook page.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our longest-serving members (joined in 2003), Thembisile Twala. May her soul rest in peace. We are shattered as a choir,” the statement read.

Cause of Death and Reactions
Reports indicate that Twala suffered a stroke and was rushed to the hospital, where she later passed away.

The principal of Empangeni High School (EHS), Sizwe Zwane, where Twala worked as a teacher, expressed deep sorrow over her passing.

“On behalf of the EHS community, I convey heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our dear sister, Thembisile Twala, who passed away yesterday.

“May God be with the staff of Phendukani Full-Service School, our partners in the education village where she was working as a choir conductor and teacher.

“Empangeni High School appreciates the contribution she made as a music teacher and conductor. This is a big loss to the choral fraternity. We were confident that she was going to recover; unfortunately, God had a different plan. May her soul rest in peace.”
