The Late Connie Chiume to be Honoured with a Star at Soweto Theatre

The late legendary actress Connie Chiume, known for her remarkable contributions to South African theatre and film, will be posthumously honoured with a star at the Soweto Theatre. According to Bona Magazine, this tribute is part of the theatre’s “Celebration of Our Legends” initiative, which draws inspiration from the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In a statement released to Kaya FM last month, the Soweto Theatre emphasised the significance of this honour, recognising Chiume’s enduring influence on the South African arts scene. “The star will be unveiled as a symbol of her enduring impact and as a testament to her contributions to the cultural heritage of our nation,” the statement read.

Connie Chiume’s career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. As the only inductee revealed so far out of the 40 legends to be honoured, her legacy is set to inspire future generations. “Connie Chiume’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of artists and performers, and her memory will forever remain a guiding light in the world of theatre and beyond,” the statement continued.Vincent Mitau, the general manager at the Soweto Theatre, spoke to Citizen News about the significance of this initiative, stating, “By embedding these 40 stars in the walls of the Soweto Theatre, we not only recognise their immense contributions to the arts but also highlight the vital importance of creativity in our society.”

The tribute to Chiume was in the works even before her passing, as confirmed by James Ngcobo, Artistic Director of Joburg City Theatres. “Her passing came just on the eve of us honouring her with this star,” he shared.

The star unveiling ceremony is scheduled to take place on 29 September, where Chiume, along with other influential figures in the theatrical sphere, will be celebrated for their invaluable contributions to South African culture and the arts. This event will serve as a poignant reminder of the power of creativity and the lasting legacy of legends like Connie Chiume.
