Kelly Khumalo’s Empini Goes Gold
Not only did Kelly Khumalo bless the masses with her powerful and angelic voice at the virtual ‘The Voice Of Africa’ album listening session which was broadcast on YouTube, she shared a wonderful milestone that her hit song Empini has reached.
Taking to social media, Kelly announced that her song Empini has gone gold. The single was released in June and the music video that accompanied it was released in August on YouTube and has since garnered over 700 000 views.
Explaining the meaning behind the usage of a black painted body, she wrote, “We are not only rich in culture but in minerals as well, Nigeria produced more than 1.9 Million barrels of oil per day in 2014 ranked as the 11th largest oil producer in the world.”
Khumalo has released her very celebrated album ‘The Voice Of Africa’ today and has received some great reception from fans.
Speaking on the meaning behind the album and the message portrayed, she told ZAlebs that the 8-track album is a reflection of ‘what we go through as Africans at large.’
Kelly says she is thrilled about her new body of work, and fans can expect to be taken into a journey of self-reflection of who we are as Africans.
“The album tells the stories of Africa, the richness of our culture and just who we are as Africans, hence the album is called The Voice of Africa.”
The songstress has worked with talented people on the album, including the likes of music producer Mondli Ngcobo, and Msaki, she also added that working with Mondli is always nothing short of amazing due to his talent.
“Msaki was the first person I started working with on the album, it was a breath of fresh air to have a female producer, who is also a musician,”
A viral video of her performing a song with Dr Hlengiwe Mhlaba called Esiphambwaneni, she details how difficult it was for them to record the song in different locations, but say they made a masterpiece.
Tapping into her Gospel side of her artistry, Kelly said “I didn’t choose Dr. Hlengiwe. God did, never in my wildest dream would I imagine the Goddess of Gospel in a song with me but somehow she is, thank God for Mondli. Esiphambanweni sums up my Journey with God, how He cares, provides, protects, teaches and chooses to bless me through it all. I want people to remember God’s love for them and the significance of the Cross.”
“It was a bit strange because we did not get to be in studio together with Hlengiwe due to covid-19, she recorded in Durban and I recorded in Johannesburg but we delivered,” says Kelly.
