Lerato Kganyago was born on July 22, 1982. The 39-year-old grew up in Johannesburg’s Soweto township.

Lerato attended Ipolokeng Primary School and completed her secondary education at Boksburg High School. She has stated in previous interviews that she grew up feeling like an ugly duckling.
“Throughout high school, I always thought I was the ugly duckling. I never thought I was pretty, I was tomboyish, and I was quiet and reserved,” she told Anele Mdoda on Real Talk.
She built up her confidence by entering beauty pageants. The once shy teenager won several pageants including Miss Soweto and Miss Jam Alley.
Lerato aspired to be a lawyer or a doctor when he was younger. She went on to Damelin College to study Public Relations and Travel and Tourism. Lerato worked as a flight attendant for Qatar Airways before becoming a radio broadcaster. She was also employed for SA Express.

Winning Miss Soweto in 2005 marked a watershed moment in Lerato’s career. She got her first big break on Soweto TV thanks to the pageant. She went to the channel’s launch with a buddy, and the rest was up to fate.
“When we got there they had a presenter missing because they were going on-air that day. So this white lady from Urban Brew came to me and said, ‘listen we are missing a presenter… I heard you are Miss Soweto, can you do this?’. I had never done television, live television for that matter,” she told MacG on his YouTube series.
She worked as a flight attendant while also working at Soweto TV for roughly five years. Lerato went on to become one of South Africa’s most well-known TV hosts, with appearances on programmes like The LKG Show, LIVE AMP, and The Link. Lerato had auditioned for 50 different shows before joining The Link.
Lerato has also dabbled with acting. Her acting career began on The Phat Joe Show. On the show, she performed comedic skits. Lerato has since been on Muvhango, Play: Sex Tips for Girls, and The Wild, among other shows.
Lerato began her radio career at Jozi FM, a community station. The employment helped her prepare for a career in business. Lerato has landed a spot on Metro FM, one of South Africa’s most popular radio stations. “Joining Metro FM enhanced my DJ career significantly. “Everything just fell into place,” she said in an interview with Jet magazine.
Her “darkest” radio moment, she said, was when she had to co-host a show with Bonang Matheba. She was held responsible for Bonnag’s unexpected departure. Both ladies co-hosted the Front Row after a reorganization at Metro FM in 2017. Bonang departed the station hours later, expressing dissatisfaction with Metro FM’s handling of the restructuring.
Despite having worked in the media field for several years, Lerato added businesswoman to her resume. She is the owner of Black Angel, an event management company. Flutter by LKG, Lerato’s award-winning eyelash line, was recently debuted.

Over the years, Lerato Kganyago has sought to keep her love connections quiet. Despite her position, she has previously revealed information about her lovers. Katlego Mashego, a Bafana Bafana player, was formerly her boyfriend. They dated for four years before getting engaged in 2013.
Their relationship, unfortunately, did not last. Lerato said that she pretended they were still dating for eight months after their breakup because she wanted time to absorb it. “The doctor kept looking for the heartbeat and she was looking everywhere. I remember I was not looking at the monitor… I kept asking her is everything okay… I won’t lie, at some point I felt like lesser of a woman. All I want is someone to hold in my arms,” she said.
Lerato expressed her dissatisfaction with her status as a woman. In a separate interview, she stated that she had two miscarriages. “I’ve just mentioned the (most recent) one because it was the one that had the most impact on me.” In a 2017 interview with Real Talk, Lerato revealed, “That was when I really wanted to have a child.” She sought counseling to help her cope with the loss.
Despite her heartbreak, Lerato remains committed to being a mother one day. She claims she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of adoption. Lerato used her social media skills to spread adoption awareness. Adoption is “not a white thing,” she reminded her Twitter followers in 2017.
